Summer health and hygiene

It’s that time of year again when we wipe down the sun loungers, disinfect the climbing frame, pop on the sun cream and soak up some rays. And then the inevitable rain clouds move in. Typical!

We can’t rely on the Great British Summer, but we can make sure we’re as safe as possible whether we’re in the sun or not. This year, alongside all the usual summer health warnings, there’s another, slightly more unseasonal health concern in the news: the flu virus. Current government advice is that there’s absolutely no reason to be alarmed, but it’s always worth bearing a few hygiene factors in mind as we enjoy the summer months.

  1. The science bit...
Viruses, including the flu virus, are easily spread. If we’re infected and we sneeze or cough without covering our mouths, tiny droplets containing the virus remain in the air for some time and can be inhaled by other people. Similarly, if we cough or sneeze into our hands and don’t wash them immediately, the virus can then be transferred to anything we touch like door handles, computer keyboards and phones. Flu viruses live on hard surfaces for up to 24 hours and on soft surfaces for up to 20 minutes, so they can be easily picked up by other people.

  2. Atishoo? Use a tissue!
Whether you’re at home or out and about, the best way to stop the virus spreading is to cover your mouth with a clean tissue when sneezing or coughing. Ensure you dispose of used tissues instantly, and wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or use an antibacterial hand sanitiser. It’s particularly important that children understand this too, as viruses can spread rapidly in this age group.

  3. Hygiene at home
Personal hygiene is essential to helping stop the spread of germs, but it’s also important to maintain hygiene in the home, particularly in certain areas. Zoflora has been proven to kill viruses including the flu virus, so disinfecting hard surfaces with diluted Zoflora is the ideal way to protect your home and keep germs at bay. Germ hotspots around the home include door handles, computer keyboards and mice, phones, TV remotes and handrails (ensure you always unplug electrical items first!).
