Ways to Keep Warm at Home Without Turning Up the Heating
As the colder weather sets in, many of us are tempted to reach for the thermostat and turn the heating up to beat the chill. But when the bills drop on the doormat, you may wish you had been more savvy with the heating controls. Keep your heating bills down by adopting smarter ways to keep warm, without turning the heating up.
Keep it Low
Keeping your thermostat at a constant comfortable temperature is a great way to keep your heating bills to a minimum. Set your heating thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature, this will vary from home to home but is typically between 18 and 21 degrees. Most people should be warm enough within this temperature in jeans and a jumper.
Did you know: Adjusting your thermostat by one degree lower cuts your fuel consumption by up to 10%! So even the smallest of changes can make a significant difference to your energy bills.
Keep the Radiators Clear
This may seem like an obvious one, but many of us block the heat coming from our radiators without even realising it. Move furniture a few inches away from radiators to allow the hot air and warmth to circulate freely and heat the room. Also, check to see if your curtains are blocking heat from the radiators. If you dry your laundry on the radiators, spread it evenly around the house and make sure you turn it regularly to help it dry quicker, always remembering to remove it as soon as it is dry.
Dress for the Cold
Whilst we are not suggesting you walk around your house in your coat and gloves, think about how you are dressed when you are at home. Could you put another layer on, or grab some socks and slippers to help you retain your heat? If family members are cold and they are wearing a t-shirt, suggest they put a jumper on. For those who really feel the cold, you may want to consider investing in some thermal vests and socks to help keep the chill at bay.
Keep Warm and Cosy
When we are sitting still for long periods of time we are more likely to feel the cold, as our bodies are not generating the warmth they would be if we were moving about. Avoid turning the heating up or putting the fire on in the evening when you are relaxing on the sofa, and instead think about keeping a selection of blankets for the family to use, grab a hot water bottle or use it as a reason to have a family snuggle on the sofa. Keep your hot water bottles free from bacteria and smelling fresh by regularly rinsing out with your favourite fragrance of Zoflora disinfectant.
