The Hidden Bacteria

No matter how regularly and thoroughly you clean your home, there will sometimes be harmful bacteria lurking in the most unusual of places. Most bacteria are helpful and actually necessary for the human body to function, however some can cause nasty illnesses, such as E coli and Salmonella. We have identified the most popular hotspots in your home for bacteria to hangout, here are some facts to get you thinking.

  • When the toilet is flushed, germs can travel as far as 6 feet.
  • 1 single bacterium cell can become more than 8 million cells in less than 24 hours.
  • Studies show that a child's high chair can carry 1,500 times more faecal bacteria than the same child's potty.

Dish cloths and sponges - These kitchen items are particularly problematic, and even if your kitchen cloth appears clean it can still have high contamination levels. Dish cloths and sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria as they hold moisture, and are normally used for multiple tasks. Dilute 1 capful of Zoflora with 400ml water and soak your cloths, dish brushes and sponges. Once soaked, leave to dry fully.

Handles and switches - When you consider how many times you switch on the lights or use a door handle, it should come as no shock that they are bacteria hotspots! Reduce the risk of infection from these areas by disinfecting all light switches and door handles once per week, by wiping with diluted Zoflora on a cloth.

Make up sponges and brushes - Makeup brushes and sponges give bacteria a fantastic opportunity to thrive and breed. Bacteria that live on your make up brushes or sponges can cause nasty eye and skin infections. To help avoid these, ensure that you regularly wash your brushes and sponges in a mild, soapy solution and allow to dry fully.

Clean laundry - Try to avoid leaving your wet laundry in the washing machine after it has been washed, as bacteria can flourish in damp areas in a short amount of time. To avoid bacteria breeding, transfer your clothing directly into the dryer, or drying rack/washing line once the wash is complete. To freshen your washing, add a capful of Zoflora to the rinse cycle, for long-lasting freshness.

Pet toys - Pet toys can harbour millions of bacteria that can potentially cause infections. Ensure your family and pet are safe by cleaning plastic or rubber pet toys once per week. You can do this by soaking the toys in diluted Zoflora. Rinse the toys thoroughly in clean water and allow to dry completely, before giving it back to your pet.

Coffee maker - Your coffee maker is a fantastic place for bacteria to breed. When you clean your coffee container ensure that you wipe any excess water with a paper towel. Why? When water sits, it is a perfect place for bacteria to multiply. Use diluted Zoflora to wipe down all outer surfaces of your coffee machine.

Salt and pepper shakers - Salt and pepper shakers are an extremely common place for the cold virus to stick. So to avoid the virus being transferred between your family, ensure that you give the shakers a thorough wipe with diluted Zoflora, next time you're doing your daily clean.
